Rental bond in New Zealand: What you need to know

A bond is a security deposit paid at the start of a tenancy. Understanding how bonds work helps protect both tenants and landlords.

How much is a rental bond?

In New Zealand, a bond cannot exceed 4 weeks’ rent. If your weekly rent is $500, the maximum bond is $2,000. The bond must be lodged with Tenancy Services within 23 working days of receiving it.

Getting your bond back

When your tenancy ends, your bond should be refunded within 10 working days if there are no disputes. The landlord can claim from the bond for unpaid rent, damage beyond fair wear and tear, or cleaning costs.

Tip: Always do a thorough property condition inspection when you move in and take photos. Keep copies of all documentation for bond disputes.
